Living in Ward 4

In a gem of a city, Ward 4 is the sweet spot! Ward 4 is where bridges are crossed, babies are born, and baseball ushers in spring with the crack of a bat. Our location is largely residential and walkable, but we can also lay claim to several of Newburyport’s jewels, including:

  • Anna Jaques Hospital

  • Atkinson Common

  • Belleville Roots Music Series

  • The historic Chain Bridge

  • Pioneer League fields

  • The Towle Building

  • The best trick-or-treating in Newburyport!

Pro Tip: Some streets are shared by two or more wards! If you live on the edge of Ward 4, check the neighboring ward for your street, since it may be listed in Ward 3, 5, or 6.

Safety

Speed and distracted driving are big safety issues in Ward 4, particularly on Merrimac, High and Low Streets, as well as the “cut-through” side streets that connect these main roads to each other. Much work remains to make our streets safer for cyclists and pedestrians, but the city has recently stepped up provide:

  • Striping near crosswalks to discourage cars from parking too close to crossings and improve pedestrian visibility

  • Radar speed signs to show drivers’ speeds and remind then to slow down

  • Police-led speed studies to help direct enforcement to problem areas

And coming soon: a High Street crosswalk at Rawson Avenue, scheduled to be painted when Rawson is repaved and the sidewalk is completed next year.
